Madonna paid tribute to Aretha Franklin at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night, but her words were criticised for being centred on herself.
She gave the speech before presenting the award for video of the year to Camila Cabello, but instead of simply paying respect to Franklin – who died on Madonna's 60th birthday last week – she used the occasion to talk at length about the beginnings of her own career.
Afterwards, Madonna was lambasted on Twitter for making it all about her.
Cal Thomas and Marion McKeone discussed this and more from the United States, including Rudy Giuliani's "truth isn't truth" remark and Melania Trump's warnings about the destructive power of social media.
