Michael Healy-Rae, Independent TD for Kerry, has written a book called Time To Talk, containing stories from his life and the people he has met.
He spoke to Matt on The Last Word about his work in the local community, his experience in business and his political career.
He described how he copes with the stress that can arise from dealing with so many things at once, and why he takes on other people's problems as if they were his own: "I learned an awful lot during the recession about dealing with people. It's not what happens to you that's important, it's how you deal with it."
Michael detailed some of the near-death experiences he has had, and how they have given him a determination to make the most of every day.
He also addressed the issue of how he and his family are often perceived by the public.
"People can think whatever they like of anybody. All we do is put our heads before the people and say, 'Vote for us or don't vote for us'. If they do, we're there to represent them, and we do it in our own ordinary, honest, straightforward way."
