This week on The Last Word, we looked back at Pope John Paul II's visit to Ireland in 1979 in a special documentary series, Papal Attraction.

We looked at what Ireland was like in 1979, socially and politically, and how it influenced the welcome the Pope received.

We then remembered the mass in the Phoenix Park, which was attended by an estimated quarter of a million people and which was the largest gathering of Irish people ever, followed by the Pope's visit to Galway and Knock in the west of Ireland.

Finally, we looked at the dark secrets of the Catholic Church which remained unspoken in 1979.
