Ireland may not be the motoring centre of the world these days, but did you know that we once had a thriving car manufacturing industry?

It started in the 1930s when Sean Lemass, then Minister for Industry and Commerce, came up with the idea of manufacturing cars in Ireland to get around expensive imports from the UK and elsewhere.

As a result, complete knocked down cars were brought into the country and reassembled here. This included some of the biggest car brands, one of which - the famous Volkswagen Beetle - was built outside Germany for the first time.

The history of Ireland's motor manufacturing industry is chronicled in a new book, Motor Assembly in Ireland, by Bob Montgomery.

He joined Michael Sheridan in discussing the subject in our weekly motoring slot.
