Retail Excellence Ireland says food shops and pharmacies will change their layouts and formalise restrictions on the numbers of people who can be in shops at a given time.
Many shops have also made the decision to close their doors due to the coronavirus outbreak, in what is being referred to as the "hardest day in retail history".
