Shane Ross's drink-driving bill was passed in the Dáil this afternoon, but it wasn't without its dramatic moments as the Transport Minister himself very nearly voted against it by accident, by pressing the wrong button.
However, the mistake was corrected, and Minister Ross joined Matt on The Last Word to discuss the law reforms detailed in the bill and the opposition to it by certain TDs - such as those who argue that having one drink before driving is not life-threatening, or that rural isolation will be an even bigger problem for people who can't drive after consuming some alcohol.
He acknowledged that there are "disadvantages to living in rural Ireland and it's a matter that needs to be addressed." But he still believes that, if someone is over the limit, they should lose their license.
"My only objective is that lives should be saved."
