Fine Gael Senator Neal Richmond has suggested that all underage sports should introduce a 'half-game' rule to guarantee game time for children.
The argument is that children often feel left out if they don't get as much playing time as their teammates, and many become disillusioned and give up.
Antonio Mantera, coach with Castleknock Celtic, says it would be hard to make this compulsory, but thinks it's not a bad idea.
"The best way children can learn is by playing the game. They're certainly not going to learn and develop by sitting on the bench. We're here to help them develop."
He says that playing is often more important to children than winning.
"First and foremost everybody goes out to try and win, but kids just want to play the game."
