Should the state provide sanitary products to women and girls for free?
Eamon Delaney of the Hibernia Forum believes this is an example of a "nanny state mentality" within Fianna Fáil.
"It's more free stuff which would be given universally. We live in a society now where people want free housing, they want free water, and I just thought: why sanitary products?"
"Period poverty is not something I had heard before, and it's not something female friends of mine had heard before either. I would be wary of not spending taxpayers' money on endless schemes and gimmicks."
Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford Lee says a lot of women are experiencing period poverty, which means they have no access to sanitary products due to their financial circumstances.
"This is damaging and undignified and they need to be provided with these products in a sensitive and dignified manner."
"Children and young women are routinely missing school because they cannot afford these products, and this is having a detrimental effect on their education. It's a human rights issue."
