Many of us take paracetamol for pain, but it can be more dangerous than you might realise.

A recent case in the Coroner's Court highlighted the fact that taking just a few extra tablets is enough to cause damage, even if the amount is not much higher than the recommended dose.

Dr Ray Walley joined us for our weekly medical slot to explain more.

Paracetamol is a drug that reduces fever and pain. The maximum adult dose is two tablets four times a day, with minimum four-hour gaps in between.

Exceeding the standard dose can cause liver failure, and Ray says that 52% of all transplants in Ireland are due to overdose.

He says the most important thing is to look at the box, check the expiry date and the dosage.
