Thousands of 50p coins produced to commemorate Brexit on 31 October will be melted down after Boris Johnson accepted a three-month extension from the EU.
The coins had already been minted so they could be put into circulation as soon as the UK left the EU. It has been confirmed that a commemorative coin will still be produced when Brexit does eventually take place.
