Under 130,000 people attended the Papal mass in the Phoenix Park - significantly less than the half a million that were expected.

Is this a sign of indifference towards the Catholic Church?

Brenda Power, columnist with the Irish Daily Mail and Sunday Times, thinks the level of engagement with the Pope's visit was overestimated.

She think that there is a new relationship with the Church, where people "trust their own consciousness and go by what feels right for them, while still feeling at liberty to describe themselves as Catholic."

David Quinn, director of the Iona Institute, says there were those who were enthusiastic about the visit and those who were "essentially indifferent to it."

"Ireland has become a far more secular country, and that trend was in place when Pope John Paul came here."

He thinks this feeling existed among mass-going Catholics, and that the visit of Pope Francis was "premature - there's too much unsettled business about the scandals."

Colm O'Gorman, executive director of Amnesty International, organised the Stand for Truth march to remember survivors of clerical abuse. He says it wasn't a protest: "We were inviting people to stand together in an act of solidarity and commitment to truth, justice and love. It was a positive thing for something rather than against something."

"I had no difficulty at all in believing that half a million people would go to the Papal mass. There's no conflict between the idea of manifesting your faith and condemning the crimes and cover-ups of the Catholic Church. Those are two different things."
