Greyhounds are probably one of the most misunderstood dog breeds, with the result that it often takes twice as long to re-home them as other dogs.
Dogs Trust have launched a new campaign called 'Greywatch', which aims to educate people about greyhounds and their potential as family pets.
Suzie Carley, Executive Director at Dogs Trust, explains: "What we're trying to do with this campaign is highlight how fantastic greyhounds are as household pets and dispel some of the common misconceptions and show how loyal, quiet and loving they are."
Many people wrongly assume that, because greyhounds are used for racing, they need a lot of exercise. But Suzie says that 15 to 20 minutes a day is more than enough to keep them happy. You will, however, need a good-sized house and garden as greyhounds enjoy their space.
It's often thought that greyhounds don't get on with other dogs, but this is another myth. As Suzie says, "They are able to be safely introduced with other dogs, smaller dogs and cats."
Although sheep-worrying can be a concern for farmers, it's a common issue for all breeds of dog.
"We aim to educate all dog owners about responsible dog ownership, and that includes greyhounds. You're going to have that issue with all dogs."
Suzie says that 90% of people have never owned a greyhound as a pet, and half of those surveyed had never even considered it as a possibility. But Dogs Trust is hoping that this campaign will help change people's views on greyhounds and consider welcoming one into the family.
