With the referendum on repealing the Eighth Amendment just weeks away, people are being urged to be conscious of targeted ads on social media.
It appears there could be attempts to misinform voters in relation to the facts on the referendum, according to Gavin Sheridan, journalist and co-founder of the legal intelligence company Vizlegal.
When looking at ads that were coming up on people's Facebook feeds, Gavin came across one from a website and Facebook page called 'Undecided8', offering people "unbiased facts" about the referendum.
It was initially unclear who was behind the ads, but Gavin says, "After some extensive digging, it became clear that the website was being run by the 'no' side of the campaign."
The website's source code revealed a connection to the 'Protect the 8th' group, as well as to a US-based Catholic organisation. Gavin describes the ads as "an operation to identify undecided voters and target them."
