The HSE is working towards achieving a tobacco-free Ireland by 2025, where less than 5% of the population would smoke.
Is this realistic?
Dr Paul Kavanagh, Clinical and Research Lead for the HSE Tobacco Free Ireland Programme, says we are making progress, and that there are now more quitters than smokers in Ireland.
But he says there are still tobacco control challenges that need to be addressed, such as the use of roll-up cigarettes, particularly among younger people. These are cheaper than other cigarettes and many also mistakenly believe they are less harmful.
