A new survey shows that a quarter of workers in Dublin spend more than an hour travelling to work.

How much time is an acceptable commute?

Christopher Paye, general manager of Jobs.ie, says that 83% of these workers are starting their journeys between 7am and 9am, which means "everyone is hitting the roads at the same time, contributing to the long commute."

As demand goes up for housing and people are having to move outside the urban areas, our road network doesn't allow for it and it does mean people are having to commute longer distances just to get to their place of business."

Gordon Jones is a support engineer at Innovate in Gorey, Co. Wexford. Before moving to his current workplace, he used to commute every day from his home in Gorey to Cherrywood on the outskirts of Dublin.

"On a good day it was an hour each way. The record was three and a half hours on a bad day."

Gordon says the commute was disastrous for his mental health: "I have a young family and I wasn't spending much time with them."

"I was enjoying the work, I just couldn't handle the constant commute."

Leslie Shoemaker, a counselling psychologist and lecturer at DIT, confirms that long commutes have "a major impact on people's wellbeing."

"You're missing out on the milestones of your kids and you have no time to unwind. We don't do well when we don't have those connections with our family and friends."
