Carol Vorderman is currently ducking the pollen bomb, by hiding out in Bristol.

The former Countdown host joined Dermot & Dave for a chat and revealed she thinks she’s suffering from menopausal hayfever, due to the pollen count.

Carol soon managed to get her streaming eyes under control however and the chat then turned to her Countdown career, a programme she co-hosted for over a quarter of a century with Richard Whiteley.

Following the death of her co-host Carol said she knew it was time to move on, ‘I left after 26 years, I’m a great believer in new chapters, it was like a marriage and it was a massive part in my life, but I didn’t want to be sort of, hanging around.’

During her time on Countdown Carol said it was wonderful to see how women’s experiences in television changed over the years, however when it comes to closing the pay gap Carol was hesitant to elaborate on whether or not we still have a long way to go.

Speaking to Dermot & Dave Carol said, ‘Ok I’m going to give you an exclusive here how, I can’t get involved in that because the only heated debate Richard and I ever had was when he found out that I was being paid three times more than him.’

Carol added, ‘The whole gender pay gap thing is not necessarily men versus women, there’s a lot of women against women. Trolling on Twitter - it’s not men having a go at women it’s often women having a go at women, which I kind of think, ‘Where’s the sisterhood gone?’ I’m glad it’s being discussed though and it is out in the open now.’

Ahead of our own papal visit in August Carol also reflected on the time she attended the Papal vigil in Hyde Park for Pope Benedict XVI

Carol revealed she ended up kissing the papal ring, accidentally leaving lipstick on it, laughing ‘What do you do in a situation like that?’’

Carol is currently working on a project close to her heart - The Maths Factor, which is an online mathematical learning experience for children featuring video tutorials hosted by Carol.

Over 100,000 children have logged on to help improve their maths skills and Carol says they see huge improvements in standards in just a matter of weeks.
