Have you ever wondered where your electricity comes from?

Much of Ireland's electricity is in fact still produced using coal, some of which comes from Colombia.

Aviva Chomsky, Professor of History and Latin American Studies at Salem University, spoke earlier today at the first of Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan's series of lunchtime lectures, 'Climate Change: The Whole Picture'.

She spoke about the human rights violations endured by coal miners in La Guajira, Colombia, and why we should be concerned about it.

It was recently reported that the ESB's Moneypoint power plant in Co. Clare imports millions of tons of coal every year from the Cerrejón mine in La Guajira. It is one of the world's largest open coal mines, owned by three of the world's largest mining multinationals, and operating in one of the poorest and most marginalised regions.
