One of the big talking points of the recent referendum campaign has been the use of posters, with people complaining that they are an eyesore.

There were also objections to the graphic images used on some of the posters put up by the No side.

Is there a case for restricting the type of posters can be put up during a referendum or election campaign?

Dr Jennifer Kavanagh, author of Electoral Law in Ireland and lecturer at Waterford Institute of Technology, thinks it would be a good idea to follow the example of some other European countries, where local authorities hire billboards for election posters.

This gives everyone a fair chance and prevents posters being put up everywhere.

Dublin City Councillor Mannix Flynn doesn't believe there is anything wrong with the current process.

He says that, as he personally cannot compete with the bigger parties, a restriction on posters would put him at a disadvantage during an election campaign.
