Ryanair is calling for restrictions on the sale of alcohol at Irish airports.

It comes after a flight from Dublin to Ibiza had to be diverted to Paris due to a group of intoxicated Irish passengers.

Travel journalist Ed Finn thinks the problem lies not in people drinking at airports, but on the flights themselves.

"I would have no alcohol on planes at all. Most flights these days are short-haul so there's absolutely no need to be drinking alcohol on planes, but it is completely unenforceable to talk about banning it at airports."

Eunan McKinney of Alcohol Action Ireland says there is a level of hypocrisy in Ryanair's proposal, referencing the airline's recent ad which depicted a young holidaymaker passed out on a beach next to an empty bottle.

"On one hand they're perpetuating a state of ambivalence around the dysfunctional relationship we have with alcohol, but at the same time they want us to stop drinking at airports."

"I think there is a certain level of hypocrisy in what they're proposing to do here."
