Leo Varadkar has proposed having an annual 'Republic Day' to celebrate the anniversary of the end of British rule in Ireland.

The suggestion was made ahead of next year's 70th anniversary of the Republic being established.

However, some see no need for another national day, given that we already mark the anniversary of our independence on Easter Sunday - and there has also been a proposal to celebrate 21 January, as the day the first Dáil sat in 1919.

Do we really need a Republic Day?

Helen Vaughan and Brian Finnegan joined us for The Week Trending to discuss this and some of the other stories making headlines.

These include the woman who was unfairly dismissed from her job after taking time off following a miscarriage, plans in the UK to ban the use of electric dog collars, and the man who was jailed for life for deliberately infecting five people with HIV.
