Thousands of students got their CAO offers today, but there are many who may not be able to take up college places due to the high costs involved.
Shane de Ris is president of Trinity College Students' Union. He says more and more students each year are having to commute long distances to college due to the cost of accommodation alone - and many of them are facing three-hour journeys.
"The money students need to go to college is becoming harder and harder to come by, and the effect this is having academically and socially and on their physical and mental health is tragic."
John Lowe, The Money Doctor, estimates that the cost of going to university is around €42,000. He says that we are getting close to the situation faced by students in the United States, where third level costs can be as high as $150,000.
"In the past students here got away with murder because our parents just paid for it, but it's getting very close to where the student needs to start putting the money in themselves if they really want to go ahead and have a decent career."
