De Bruyne on the title race with Liverpool | "We need to fight against them"

Kevin De Bruyne says Manchester City and Liverpool can spur each other on as both clubs look set to battle it out for the Premier League title once again.

De Bruyne scored City's first goal of the new season, a penalty, in last night's 3-1 win over Wolves at Molineux.

The PFA Player of the Year scored 13 goals and laid on 20 assists last season, but as he told SKY Sports, he isn't too bothered with the data when it comes to helping City regain the title.

"I would prefer to have five goals and five assists and go away with the title. You can contribute in a lot of ways. I'm a midfielder. I know these days it's a lot about statistics, but I try to set myself to play the best that I can for the team."

Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus were also on the scoresheet as City hit the ground running.

They won the title with tallies of 100 points in 2018 and 98 points in 2019, before finishing 18 points behind Liverpool last season with 81.

Belgian playmaker De Bruyne is up for the challenge again.

"If the pace is the same as the last three years, it's going to be a hard job. We want to fight against them, we need to fight against them and I think we make each other better. For me, that's what sport is all about."
