"Massive punch in the face" | Klopp reacts to Burnley defeat

Liverpool's loss to Burnley was their first Premier League defeat at home since April 2017, and manager Jurgen Klopp is taking full responsibility.

The Reds' run of 68 unbeaten top-flight games at Anfield came to an end with a 1-0 reversal, as Ashley Barnes scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Divock Origi missed a sitter in the first half, and it was costly, as the champions ended up empty-handed for the fifth Premier League game in a row.

Liverpool have also failed to score in their last four Premier League matches.

At the midway point of the season, the Merseyside club are six points behind leaders Manchester United.

Right now they are fourth in the table on 34 points after 19 games, with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton having the opportunity to leapfrog them if they win their games in hand.

Klopp told the BBC that it's a shock to the system.

"Massive, massive punch in the face, or whatever. It's my responsibility. That's the easy explanation. We had the ball a lot, we created some and didn't finish the situations off. That keeps the game open and then they get the penalty."

In the post-match press conference, Klopp says it's up to him to ensure the players bounce back and rediscover the form that saw them end a 30-year wait for the title.

"It shows a lot of things. It shows how incredible, how good the boys and how consistent the boys were, but that was never something that anybody should have taken for granted because now we see they are human beings - that's how it is. I now have to make clear what we have to do in the right moments and then we will score goals again."

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford for an FA Cup fourth-round tie on Sunday, before visiting Spurs in the Premier League next Thursday. That will be followed by another match in London against West Ham United before the end of the month.
