Mona McSharry claims 100m breaststroke bronze in Abu Dhabi

Mona McSharry claimed Ireland's second medal at the World Shortcourse Swimming Championships.

The Sligo swimmer took bronze in the women's 100m breaststroke on Monday afternoon in Abu Dhabi.

McSharry touched the wall just .11 of a second ahead of Jamaica's Alia Atkinson. Gold went to China's Qianting Tang (1:03.47), with Sophie Hansson of Sweden taking silver in a time of 1:03.50.

Her time of 1:03.92 saw McSharry set a new Irish record.

“I was definitely nervous going into it because I knew I had the potential to medal and it’s really nice to see that all come together in a race," said McSharry, "It felt really good and I’m glad I dropped time too.

“It’s been amazing. It’s been really enjoyable to watch other team mates swim really well and have a great time.

"This is the first time we’ve gotten together as a group since the Olympics and it’s much of the same swimmers, and it’s just really nice to be able to have fun and compete together and be up against the best in the world.”

Earlier in the day, Jack McMillan progressed to the final of the men's 100m freestyle. He qualified eighth fastest in a time of 46.70, just .02 off the Irish best of Shane Ryan.

McMillan will return to the pool on Tuesday for that final.

Ireland's other medalist in Abu Dhabi - Ellen Walshe - missed out on a spot in the women's 100m butterfly, but managed to set a new national best of 56.68. She missed out on a place in the final by just .06 of a second.

That was the 16th Irish record set this week in Abu Dhabi, with one day of racing remaining.
