Rory McIlroy misses first cut in two years

Rory McIlroy's missed his first weekend at a golf tournament since The Open Championship in 2019.

A five-over round of 76 saw the world number seven finish up at seven-over-par at the half-way point of the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles.

McIlroy had made the cut in 31 straight events since his poor showing at Royal Portrush and had been a top 25 finisher at his nine most recent tournaments.

The 31-year-old admitted his frustrations with the fast Rivera greens in shooting a two-over 73 on Thursday's opening day.

"If you get on the wrong side of the hole, even some putts that you feel like you're on the right side of the hole, you're being somewhat defensive because late in the day you don't want to be leaving yourself too many three- and four-footers out here.

"So yeah, tough to sort of do everything today, but especially hole putts because the greens are so tricky and so fast."

Three-time major Padraig Harrington also has a free weekend after ending up at nine-over-par. Europe's Ryder Cup captain was playing his first event since spending ten days in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Dubliner told OTB Sports earlier this week that he'll be staying in America for at least another month due to travel restrictions.
