Serena Williams knocked out of the Australian Open

Seven-time champion Serena Williams has been eliminated from the Australian Open and remains stuck on 23 Grand Slam singles titles.

The 38-year-old American lost 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 to China's Wang Qiang in the third round of the ladies singles in Melbourne.

Williams is still one victory shy of Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam titles. She hasn't won a major since the 2017 Australian Open.

It was a remarkable turnaround between the pair, as Wang only took 15 points off Williams when losing 6-0, 6-1 when they met at last year's US Open.

It's the earliest exit for Serena Williams at an Australian Open in 14 years. She had warmed up for this tournament with a win in Auckland. Her next opportunity will come at the French Open in June, where she last won a Slam in 2015.

Meanwhile, Caroline Wozniacki has called time on her career after she lost in three sets to Tunisia's Ons Jabeur.

The Dane spent 71 weeks as world number one, winning her only Grand Slam in Melbourne 2 years ago. She won almost £27 million in prize money.

The 29-year-old was found to have rheumatoid arthritis two years ago.

Elsewhere, top seed and local favourite Ashleigh Barty is into the third round. She was a straight-sets winner over Elena Rybakina.
