Paul McLoone picked the 1997 classic album 'Blur' by Blur this week. 'Blur' was Albarn and Co's fifth studio album and brought about a change in sound and style instigated by Graham Coxon.
The band recorded the album mainly in Iceland, creating a more aggressive and emotional work.
See Song 2 as an example.
It was actually seen as the album that brought Blur much more recognition stateside, with 'Song 2' being the vehicle that drove this success.
The band had been experiencing an internal fracture prior to this album. The stresses of band politics taking over. It was only when they began to communicate and listen to Coxon's ideas that they entered the studio and jammed for the first time since 1991. They got back to creating music together instead of being quite clinical about the process.
Coxon wanted the band to 'scare people again' and Albarn agreed.
One things for sure it elevated an already huge band to an even greater stage, perhaps paving the way for their longevity in the industry.
Hear more from the album tonight on The Paul McLoone Show 9PM - Midnight... Nobody Does It Better.
