- The number of times Ireland have lost to Italy since the turn of the century. The Italians beat Declan Kidney's injury depleted team 22-15 in the 2013 Six Nations Championship in Rome. The Grand Slam winning coach stood down a few weeks later. 11 of the current squad started that game.

- Sunday's match will be the second time the two sides have met at the World Cup. Four years ago Ireland secured their place in the quarter finals with a 36-6 victory in Dunedin.

- Italy beat Ireland for the third time running with a 37-22 victory in Bologna in December 1997. They were 8 point winners at Lansdowne Road earlier that year and won by a single point when the sides met in the build up to the 1995 World Cup.

- The average number of tries in a game between Ireland and Italy, with the ratio at 3:1. Ireland have scored 82 tries in their 24 games against the Azzurri, and conceded 31. Joe Schmidt's side went over the line seven times during their Six Nations win over Italy at Aviva Stadium last year, but scored just two tries in Rome in March.

- Veteran Italy flanker Mauro Bergamasco has equalled Samoa centre Brian Lima in playing in a fifth Rugby World Cup. The 36 year old has appeared in every tournament since 1999.

- Italy's narrow win over Canada last week brought a 6 game losing streak to an end. Since beating Scotland in February, Jacques Brunel's team have suffered two defeats to the Scots, Wales and France. They also turned the Five Nations into Six in 2000.

- The number of tries Keith Earls has scored at the World Cup. The Moyross man equalled Brian O'Driscoll's Irish record by touching down twice against Romania at Wembley. He also scored two tries against Italy in Dunedin in 2011.

- Italian captain Sergio Parisse is widely considered to be one of the best number eights in World Rugby. The first Italian player to be nominated for the IRB World Player of the Year award, Parisse will earn his 114th cap if he lines out against Ireland. He missed Italy's first two Pool D games due to a calf injury.

- The disastrous 2013 Six Nations campaign saw Ireland fall to a record low of ninth in the IRB World Rankings. Joe Schmidt's men were sitting second a few weeks ago. Italy currently lie 14th, six places below their record high of eighth, which came in 2007.

- The highest number of tries in a game between Ireland and Italy. Eddie O'Sullivan's men scored eight on their way to a 51-24 victory in Rome at the end of the 2007 Six Nations. They were agonisingly close to a ninth, but Roland de Marigny touched down at the far end. This meant France won the tournament on a points difference of just 4.
