The State agency responsible for the Luas has been ordered to put up new signs - despite raising concerns that they could make conditions less safe for drivers.
The Railway Procurement Agency has been ordered to replace the signs aimed at drivers, after a watchdog received a complaint about how the signs were written in English - but NOT in Irish.
The agency says the signs are aimed at drivers only, and therefore don't fall under the usual rules where all signs issued by public agencies must be written in both of the national languages.
It's also warned of a "clutter" effect - saying that signage works best when it's clear and doesn't have to compete with other signs for someone's attention.
But An Coimisinéir Teanga says the signs fall under a legal clause that require them to be erected in both languages anyway - and now replacement signs are due to be raised by the end of the month.
However the Railway Procurement Agency says it's happy that the replacement signs - which are now being raised nine months after the original deadline - will allow it to fulfill its legal needs without compromising on the safety of drivers or passengers.
