Some shoppers at Zara stores in Turkey have found an unexpected surprise - a note highlighting labour complaints.

The unusual messages have been left in piece of clothing by former workers of local textile company Bravo Tekstil, which produced clothing for Zara and some other international retailers.

Bravo Tekstil went bankrupt last year, and staff are asking the clothing brands to compensate them for unpaid wages and severance, claiming their former boss has 'disappeared'.

The messages left for shoppers claim that the workers made the garment, but they did not get paid for it.

Owners of Zara, Mango and Next insist the operators of the bankrupt company are responsible for the unpaid money, as they had paid the now defunct company what they were owed.

BBC reports that the fashion companies have, however, set up a 'hardship fund' to help the most vulnerable workers.

Unions, meanwhile, say the fund only covers around a quarter of the losses workers have experienced.

An online petition calling for support for impacted workers has reached nearly 280,000 signatures as of writing.

The workers write: "We demand now that these brands give us the basic respect to compensate us for our labour. We demand no more than our basic rights!"
