Carrickmines residents say they have been subjected to unfair criticism

The residents of Rockville Drive say they have been subjected to irrational and unfair criticism for opposing the presence of a halting site on their street.

In a statement this evening they expressed their sympathies to the friends and families of those killed in a fire at a halting site in the area.

They are reluctant to allow the creation of a site to home 15 survivors of the fire, saying that the original halting site - built 8 years ago - was supposed to be temporary as well and wasn't fit for purpose.

They've criticised Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and the government for cutting the funding to traveller accommodation, but say they will continue to work with the council - after already meeting them three times in the past two days.

Meanwhile, The Southside Traveller Action Group says it hopes an agreement can be reached "very soon" over the re-settlement of 15 people who survived the Carrickmines fire.

The funerals of the ten victims of the tragedy - which include four children, a baby and a pregnant woman - have been delayed due to difficulty identifying the bodies.

Geraldine Dunne from the Southside Traveller Action Group says the housing situation for survivors of this disaster must be resolved - to allow the survivors grieve in peace:
