Mícheál Donoghue recently managed the Galway senior hurling team to All-Ireland success over Waterford, an achievement that is now starting to sink in.

One of the most poignant snapshots of the team's homecoming was the picture of Mícheál embracing his father and handing him the Liam McCarthy Cup.

Mícheál's father was diagnosed with dementia around the same time he became Galway manager, and he spoke to John Duggan about what the moment meant to him.

"Like any father, he's one of my greatest influences. He was very involved with us growing up in sport. He was an avid GAA supporter and was heavily involved at club and county level."

"He probably couldn't comprehend it in the way we would have liked. But in the picture, when he got the cup, it definitely resonated with him and that's why he was so emotional."

"I was delighted that I was able to share the moment with him and the rest of the family."
