Emma Stone and Casey Affleck won the best acting prizes at the Oscars last night.

Earlier, La La Land's Damien Chazelle became the youngest ever filmmaker to win best director - at the age of 32.

The best part of the night was Warren Beattie handing the award for Best Picture to the wrong film (La La Land) – but Moonlight actually won in what was one of the most entertaining mistakes ever filmed (look, nobody died and isn’t it lovely to wake up to a media storm that isn’t gruesome and actually is completely unimportant?)

What actually happened was he was given the wrong envelope – he opened the envelope meant for Best Actress and he saw La La Land and that’s where the mistake lay. It wasn’t his fault and someone in the Oscars wings will be leaving the ceremony tonight with their tail between their legs and their P45 in their hands.

Other beef at the Oscars includes Meryl Streep being maaad at Karl Lagerfeld. He called her “cheap” saying that he was working on a dress for her at the Oscars (this year’s Oscars will see a record breaking 20 nominations for Meryl) but said that she would only wear it if Chanel paid her.

He subsequently admitted this was not correct, but his retraction left Streep unsatisfied, and she has released a damning statement criticising him, saying “I do not take this lightly, and Mr Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology.”

And finally, Nicole Kidman can act, she can sing, she can certainly rock a red carpet, but today’s Academy Awards have taught us one thing: She doesn’t really know how to clap. Clapping should be with your hands, not your wrists, non?

The Shtyle:

Ruth Negga was the first actress on last night’s red carpet, but she will hardly be forgotten in her red lace high-neck dress, designed by  Pierpaolo Piccioli. Worn with matching red shoes and a beautiful headpiece—as well as a blue ACLU ribbon (American Civil Liberties Union).

Dakota Johnson wore a gold dress that actually made her look a bit like an Oscar

Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender’s girlfriend, won best dressed for me. A gothic black lace gown with corset and off-the-shoulder sleeves.

The Academy also paid tribute to Bill Paxton, who died on Saturday after complications from surgery. He was only 61

He had a string of hits with films like Aliens and Twister and Titanic and he has a role in the upcoming Emma Watson and Tom Hanks thriller, The Circle.

He leaves behind a wife of 3o years and two children.
