The Strategic Communications Unit is to be phased out.

It's after cabinet ministers considered a report on the issue from the country's top civil servant earlier.

The Taoiseach's believed to have told ministers the SCU will be wound down over the coming months.

A review had been ordered after the unit, created to present government news, actually became the news.

Allegations last month claimed newspapers were being told to make ads for the Government's Ireland 2040 Plan look like 'real news'.
