Two men are in Garda custody after the death of a man in his 30's at a truck stop in North Cork last night. The man died after being hit with an iron bar on the head during a row with other truck drivers at the Amber filling station in Fermoy.
Gardai were called to the truck parking area attached to the rear of the Amber filling station on the Dublin Road in Fermoy at around 10.30pm last night. It's understood that the deceased, a married father of two ,who was living in Fermoy and a Polish friend also living in Fermoy, had been drinking in the town prior to going to the filling station. They got into a row with two Polish truck drivers who had pulled up to rest and the row escalated into a dispute in which an iron bar was produced.
Emergency services were called to the scene and the man was treated for head injures - however he failed to regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene. The second Polish man from Fermoy, who is also in his 30's, was taken to Cork University Hospital. He has injuries to his arms and legs which have been described as non life threatening and mainly of a defensive nature.
Two truck drivers were arrested and taken to Fermoy and Mallow Garda Stations for questioning. Gardai are believed to have recovered an iron bar at the scene. This will be examined later by technical expert for any forensic evidence that may assist in the investigation.
A review of CCTV footage is now underway and Gardai have also spoken to a number of other truck drivers who were parked at the rear of the filling station at the time of the row.
