A fortnight ago we were stunned to find that TV sitcom Friends was celebrating 20 years since its first show. 20 YEARS! Where did that go?

Well, prepare to have the last 20 years of your life flash before you as we bring you a recap of what else happened WAY, WAY back in 1994.

“My mama always said, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’”

We fell in love with Forrest Gump. The film won six Academy Awards, three Golden Globes and a host of other recognitions:

Walt Disney Pictures released The Lion King – the story of Simba, a young lion cub and future king, who flees his home after being tricked by his evil uncle into believing he caused the death of his father. The film won two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes.

All together now:

Consistently ranked one of the best movies of all time, Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman starred in The Shawshank Redemption - the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who is sentenced to life for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence.

It was nominated for seven Oscars and two Golden Globes but didn’t take home any:

One of the most influential films of the 1990s, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction was released in September 1994 and won eight awards from a total of twenty-six nominations, including an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. It gave us everything: a great soundtrack, super dialogue, some violence. It also gave us hitmen Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta):

Winner of two Academy Awards, action film Speed turned Keanu Reeves and co-star Sandra Bullock into A-List stars.

Four Weddings and a Funeral: handsome but bumbling Charles (Hugh Grant) is looking for love. It may be 20 years old but Hugh Grant’s portrayal of this charming character seems very familiar.

The film was also responsible for dominating the singles charts - Wet Wet Wet serenaded us with their cover of The Trogg’s song 'Love is All Around' which spent 15 weeks at number one in the UK Singles Chart

1994 also gave us Definitely Maybe – the debut album from Oasis. Singles included ‘Shakermaker’, ‘Live Forever’ and ‘Supersonic’:

This is quite frightening – Blur’s Parklife is 20 years old, having been released in April 1994:

It was the same month that Kurt Cobain was found dead:

On a positive note: there are 86 days of 2014 left to enjoy...
