With the world falling to its knees and pounding the ground in grief at the news about One Direction taking a break we thought we’d have a look at some other traumatic conscious uncouplings that have scarred hope and hearts.

Ross And Rachel

One of the great ‘will they, won’t they, I wish they would, oh they did, oh no maybe they shouldn’t have’ relationships, Ross And Rachel had the world on the edge of its sofa for what seemed like decades. So here’s what happened (takes a deep breath) After Rachel begins her new job and Ross starts getting jealous of Mark, her co-worker, Rachel decides they should go on a break. Ross, sleeps with someone else as he thought they were ‘ON A BREEEEEAK’ and when Rachel finds out, she is pure ragin’. She decides she can no longer trust him, ending their relationship and our dreams that love is real!

Old Pippa is more 'Away' than 'Home'!

1990 is a year that fills our little Irish hearts with Jackies Army joy as we to this day revel in our scrappy efforts in Italy. Yet all this manic jubilation covers a trauma that many of us feel and fear to this day. It was in 1990 that a woman turned around in an Australian kitchen and started to call herself Pippa. Our initial confusion and disbelief was soon replaced with realisation and horror that that Home And Away and simply replaced Pippa with a new model and nothing was the same again....ever!

Roy Keane and Saipan

Saipan is the largest island of the Northern Mariana Islands, a commonwealth of the United States in the western Pacific Ocean. According to the census, Saipan's population is 48,220. Well in May 2002 that population dropped to 48,219 with what will go down as ‘The Incident’ and THE most divisive moments in Irish sport if not history. Roy Keane’s decision to leave the Irish squad’s preparation for the World Cup in Japan as the result of a series of damaging fallouts with Mick McCarthy, The FAI, his teammates and if reports are to be believed, his own shadow, sent a schism through this country not seen since the civil war.

Robbie Williams leaves Take That

2015 marks the 20th anniversary of a split that will still cause some grown women to clutch at the nearest mantle piece in grief. It was on July 17th 1995 that Robbie Williams left Take That and in the process broke millions of young hearts, lost millions and made little Mark Owen cry. In his own words "I said to the boys, 'This will be my last tour.' We went for a curry the night before everything happened and we were taking a competition winner for a curry. It mustn't have been a very nice evening for them! AWK-WARRRD!

Carrie and the one that got away.

While it's not as intense as a post-it note, Carrie telling Aidan on Sex and the City that she didn't want to be engaged to him anymore broke our hearts. And then when they ran into each other on the streets years later and he had kids and she had Big? Ugh. Dead.
