You want your weekly fix of local news that doesn;t make a splash nationally? Have a listen to All News Is Local with Ronan Casey and Anton Savage:

SPARE a thought for those who want to alleviate the traffic jams in Galway city by cycling to work.. Galway cyclists are now the most rain-soaked in the world, according to statistics compiled by a data analyst.

It turns out that Galway city is the most miserable for cycling to work with almost half getting a soaking on an annual basis – this is based on information from weather stations which monitor rainfall at peak commuter hours between 8am- 9am.

There were a total of 261 wet days in Galway city last year out of a total of 365. That’s a 71.5% chance of rain.

According to the Galway City Tribune’s Declan Tierney the figures were compiled by Shane Lynn from County Kildare who took data from 18 worldwide cities.

Galway. In the Rain. All the time.

Galway has more wet working days than the likes of Glasgow, Belfast, Cork, Amsterdam or Edinburgh. Dublin pales into insignificance in terms of rainfall compared to Galway. Madrid in Spain has the lowest amount of rainfall for cycling commuters – even lower than the likes of Sydney or San Francisco.

The survey revealed that the majority of wet commuting days in Galway city during 2015 were in January, November and December but cyclists were doused by rain on 12 days in July and 11 days in August as it was quite a wet summer.

He said that he found commuting between the showers in Galway city close to impossible over a few weeks in 2015 when he was working in Parkmore West and had to get into Dangan.“There was just no escape,” he said.

Also in the news....

A mysterious Lucozade dumper is sticking in the craw of clean up crews in West Kerry. During last week’s nationwide Clean-Up, piles of bottles of the energy drink were discovered, re-opening a year-old mystery.  A motorist who apparently can’t drive the Conor Pass each day without chucking at least one empty Lucozade bottle out the window of his or her car. It reminded our Ronan of the (still unsolved) piddle riddle of Glanmire, where hundreds of Coke bottles full of piss were dumped in a ditch.

Ronan also had stories of horse manure dumping in an area of Portlaoise where the people have no horses, the amazing story of the Lucozade hoverboard thief, incredible broad-daylight KFC dumping, the quest continues for Longford’s signature sausage and some headlines of the week.
