What's in a name? How many times have you looked at a restaurant menu and been wondered how a particular dish got its name? Our resident food investigator, renowned chef Gary O’Hanlon, like the rest of us, is intrigued by how some dishes got their names. Especially considering he has, at some stage, either cooked most of them or eaten them

Many famous and classic dishes have been named after people; others after regions of the world. The origins of a dish are often as interesting as the food itself, so let's decode some of these names with Gary.

Anton and Gary were talking about French Toast (not French!), Knickerbocker Glory, Eton Mess, BBQ, Buffalo Wings and Caesar Salad, but as you imagine, put two hungry horses into a studio to talk about food and it's not long before their bellies were distracted by everything from the crunch of a Vienetta to Frank's Hot Sauce.

And then came a shocking revelation about Gary's Superted jammies and Anton's Humpty Dumpty dungarees

Gary is appearing in TV3's 'The Restaurant' every Wednesday and ahead of the new series he amusingly recalls that every contestant was meant to have some degree of cooking skills, but as they turned up one by one with no notion of how to cook, Gary wondered if they ever saw the memo. In the case of Mrs Brownes Boys star Rory Cowan, it was a case of 'Can't Cook, Will Probably Never Cook' as despite having a kitchen in his house he probably has never used it!
