Imagine being able to see the world the way a hammerhead shark does? Or maybe see it like a horse? Or how about a Cat, or maybe you might like to be able to look behind you AS WELL AS in front of you, just like a chamaelon. Well, Anton Savage was one such curious human, and his wish was granted in studio this week when he was joined by Vincent O’Shea, the curator of a most marvellous collection of Meta Perception Helmets.

Meta wha? Well, animals share the same living space, but they inhabit different perceptual worlds. These sleek, polished and sophisticated meta-perceptual helmets basically allow you to play I-Spy with animal eyes thanks to their complicated design.

Created by Irish artists Anne Cleary and Dennis Connolly with help from Neil McKenzie the helmets will later this year be on display at the Science Gallery.

Earlier last year, they were one of the most popular items at the Natural History Museum

HOWYA HORSE - ANTON WITH THE HORSE HELMET

Cleary-Connolly’s helmets ingeniously invite us to experience things in ways quite different from the norm.

A huge amount of work went into the creation of each individual optical helmet. As Anton found out, people of all ages love them. Vincent recently had a group of giggling pensioners laughing their heads off after trying the Hammerhead Shark one, which allows you to see things on the double in a most ingenious and hilarious way!

The helmets are available to schools, colleges and groups and this summer, they will be a key part of a special exhibition at the Science Gallery in Dublin.

This is part of an international tour lining up for 2016, with invitations in from Birmingham, London, Barcelona, Paris and New York being studied at the moment.
