Big ugly tears

This morning, listener Darren sent a WhatsApp voice note asking if I could play Miley Cyrus Slide Away because the lyrics really resonate with him... which I did, happily.

It got us talking about songs that move us. Some of the texts into the show were so heartbreaking, I couldn't read them out, but here are some of the suggestions by listeners, and their reasons:

  • “Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. ‘And friends just can't be found...’. That line gets me every time!”

  • “Morning, any Post Malone song is extremely meaningful with the lyrics!” - Thanks, Daniel

  • “Hi Paula - you probably can’t play it, but my song is Bon Jovi Thank You For Loving Me. It was our first dance song last November when I married my best friend and the love of my life!” - John in Wexford en route to Dublin

  • Somewhere Only We Know by Keane. It’s my all-time favourite song and I hate listening to it with other people because it feels so personal to me!”

  • Under Pressure when Bowie starts at ‘coz love’s such an old fashioned word...’ Such a brilliant song!”

  • Tears in Heaven by Clapton

  • The Scientist by Coldplay… please play it Paula, I could do with a big ugly cry!”

  • Hallelujah by anyone. Too many people who’ve passed away... gets me every time. I actively avoid listening to it in front of people.”

  • “Hi Paula. Great to have you back. Bob Seger’s song Against the Wind has the classic lyric, reflecting on past youth: 'Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.'” – Kevin, Waterford

  • Robbie Williams No Regrets Paula.  In 1999, I was very overweight, in an unhappy marriage and jobless with no qualifications. I got fit, got a divorce, got a degree and now I’m happily married with 3 lovely kids!”

  • “Paula C’est La Vie evokes lots of emotion in me... like rage, fury, anger....”

  • “For me it's Kermit the Frog’s ‘It's Not Easy Being Green’. It's not easy being green… it seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things… “

  • Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Frank Sinatra

  • Hurt by Johnny Cash

  • The Blower’s Daughter. Big ugly tears!”

  • “Morning Paula, Leona Lewis’ version of Snow Patrol’s Run always brings a tear to my eye, it was played at my niece’s funeral, and the lyrics are very poignant!” - Jim

  • Supermarket Flowers - Ed Sheeran because it reminds me of when my granny died.”

  • “My one-year-old Jack had open heart surgery just before Christmas my song for him is Snow Patrol Don't Give In. He made a remarkable recovery!”

  • “Song that moves me - Bruce Springsteen, Jack Of All Trades. During the financial crash, I was laid off… huge worries at time. This song helped me feel not alone.  My brother told me about it.  He suffered badly during financial crash too” - Gareth

  • Lean on me - Bill Withers. It’s not sad. Just a beautiful idea. I try not to listen to the lyrics cause my eyes just start dripping!”

  • “Hi Paula Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here brings back good memories of passed people”

  • “A song that does it for me is Islands in the Sun by Weezer and it's kinda your fault Paula. A few years ago, I got results back from tests which confirmed that I didn't, in fact, have Cancer after being told I more than likely had it. Anyway, I was on my way to work the next morning on a bit of a high as you can imagine, and I asked you to play it for me. Which you did! And ever since then, whenever I hear it, I’m taken straight back to that morning and I feel warm all over. So thank you Paula, for making it such a special song for me. If you feel like giving it a spin, please do so!” - Mick in Wicklow
