Snooker is normally associated with potting the black, not necessarily spinning it, but the  most interesting snooker player in the world is set to make his live DJ debut in front of thousands of ravers at techno festival Bloc Weekend in March. Anton Savage caught up with him this morning to see how the transition from snooker legend to Superstar DJ is going...

As the music-loving sporting great reveals, he is a connoisseur of vinyl with open ears to all genres of music, but particularly progressive electronic music and prog rock. Electronic music that goes beyond the boom-boom-boom of commercial dance is his favourite, clever, irregular music that keeps you guessing!

The 58-year-old snooker legend is making his DJ debut with musical brother-in-arms Kavus Torabi at Bloc Weekend in March after impressing festival bosses with his local radio show 'The Interesting Alternative Show' on Brentwood's Pheonix FM, where he plays everything from prog rock to electronic to world music to krautrock to soul.

No Hawkwind! Kavus Torabi and Steve ponder what record to put on next.

Steve is a long time and highly vocal fan of the much-maligned prog rock genre and says progressive electronic music go hand-in-hand with it.

Reared on classic progressive rock of the 70’s such as Egg, Magma, Gong, Van de Graaff Generator, King Crimson, Soft Machine and Gentle Giant.

Steve’s radio show with Kavus Torabi, who now plays in well-known band Gong, is huge in the UK, with specials with the late Daevid Allen and Surgeon attracting hundreds of thousands of listen backs. The fearless duo play anything and everything, and thanksfully upload the lot onto their Mixcloud page

Anton was blown away with some of the playlists!

The lads are doing a 4 HOUR DJ SET at Bloc on Sunday, March 13!

Also playing the festival is Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Four Tet, Jeff Mills, Floating Points, Carl Craig, Ben Klock, Nina Kraviz, Goldie MBE, Andrew Weatherall, Omar-S, Evian Christ, Holly Herndon, MCDE, Steffi, Ben UFO and hundreds more from multitudes of dance genres. Steve says he is particularly looking forward to catching Holly Herndon and asked by Anton if there will be a moment during his DJ set that he’s looking forward to he said if one person comes up to him and asks him about a record and where could he or she buy it, then he’ll be satisfied of a job well done!

Of course, when you have the man who dominated the green baize throughout during an illustrious 40 year career, you have to ask him about snooker, and he had some comments and thoughts on today’s game and Ronnie O’Sullivan’s ”statement” in not going for a 147 last week which Steve thought was “disrespectful”.
