This being the first one in a series of 'on this day' stories, we've kinda lucked out. Peaked too soon, it could all be down hill from here.
It surely hasn't escaped you that it's been bucketing down out there - the tin roof on Today FM towers was rattling under the power of the monsoon.
So imagine our surprise when in a flash of brilliance we decided to do a 'on this day' feature dedicated to the glorious decade of pop (1980's) and discovered, (remember the rain now), that on this very day in 1984, the 26th of July, Prince premiered his seminal music movie 'Purple Rain'.
Brilliant, exciting, moody and cool, 'Purple Rain' propelled the Artist Formerly Known As to the pinacle of pop. Hailed by some as the new MIchael Jackson he went from zero to hero overnight. It's a fantastic film, a brilliant soundtrack and goes down as one of the decade's many pioneering musical highlights.
