Rock lore has it that Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. His reply? 'I wouldn't know...ask Rory Gallagher'
For a man of few words, this short quote perfectly sums up the influence the man had and the reverence in which he was held. He was the guitarist's guitarist, eschewing short lived glory and instead becoming a legend for his nonstop-touring ethic and fiery craft. Playing a weathered Strat, often wearing a flannel shirt, Gallagher electrified Chicago and Delta styles with scalding slide work and hard-boiled songwriting.
Arguments about whether he is the best ever were not what he was about but what IS beyond debate that when Rory left for the big gig in the sky on June 14th 1995, the world lost a genius and a gent.
Picking just 5 of our favourite moments is of course near impossible but we couldn't let the anniversary pass without marvelling at one of music's great maestros.
