The name Tame Impala has never really been more than a front for Kevin Parker. It’s a band in the sense that LCD Soundsystem was; one musician, writing and recording almost everything on their own, with a solidified touring lineup. Parker always has and always will define what Tame Impala is. Currents is his/their third album and is surely the one to lift them from being a hipster buzz word to general acclaim and acceptance.
Currents’ production is just as important as the songwriting as the sound here is lush, layered and utterly swoon inducing. This is a break-up album and Parker doesn't hide behind the sound as his lyrics. The juxtaposition of “Yes I’m Changing” and “Eventually” is especially poignant as Parker examines a breakup from both sides of the divide. With glances of disco, funk, electronica and good old fashioned lyric writing (I know!!), the album is beautiful blend of genre and influences.
Heartbreaking, heartwarming, unique and utterly gorgeous, Currents will be beautifying 'Album Of The Year' lists come the end of year. Wonderful!
Currents is out tomorrow July 17th from any music outlet worth it's salt.
