Gardai have confirmed that ten people died following this morning's fire in Carrickmines in South Dublin.

The youngest fatality was a six-month-old baby.

It's understood nine people died at the scene, while a child has died in hospital this afternoon from injuries suffered in the blaze.

The tragedy happened at a halting site on the Glenamuck road in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services arrived at the scene at a around 4:30 am, following a call from a member of the public.

Two of the four housing units on the site were badly damaged in the fire. Initial investigations suggest that the blaze broke out in one and spread to another.

Chief Superintendent Dairmuid O'Sullivan from Dun Laoghaire Garda station said the ten victims are from two families, with the youngest aged 6 months.

Three people remain in hospital this afternoon, where they are being treated for smoke inhalation. A child and a baby are among those people who were taken to Tallaght and St Vincent's hospitals in Dublin.

The Glenamuck road remains sealed off as members of the garda technical bureau carry out a technical examination.
