10,000 refugees expected to arrive from Hungary today

Austria says it expects up to 10,000 refugees to arrive from Hungary today.

The Hungarian Government originally blocked their journey to western Europe - but relented after Austria and Germany agreed to open their borders last night.

Some people attempted to walk along one of Hungary's main motorways - however a special half-hourly train service is now running to take people to Vienna - on top of 20 buses.

Erno Simon from the United Nation's refugee agency says some of those refugees urgently need help:

Ministers have suggested we could end up granting asylum to more than 2,000 refugees after the Justice Minister indicated yesterday that Ireland would take 1,800 people.

Ireland already exceeded its EU obligations by agreeing to take in 600.

MEP Brian Hayes believes a binding quota system is the fairest way to decide how many people should go to each country:

Here at home, a national day of action is being held at famine memorials across Ireland to show solidarity with refugees.

It's being organised by Campaign group Uplift and culminates in a gathering at Custom House Quays in Dublin this lunchtime (12noon)
