Thirteen people are confirmed dead after a mass shooting at a US naval base in Washington DC.

The FBI has confirmed the gunman is among the dead.

He's been named as 34-year old Aaron Alexis, who was originally from New York, but who'd been living in Fort Worth, Texas.

Three people were critically injured in the attack.  Medics say all are expected to recover.  Among the wounded is a metropolitan police officer, who sustained serious gunshot wounds to his legs.

Staff who were on lock-down have been a allowed to leave the base.  The operation to clear the massive military facility is continuing, as FBI agents attempt to identify another man suspected of taking part in the attack.

He is reported to be an African-American in his 50's.

Several roads have been closed during Washington's commuter rush hour as the operation continues.  Schools that were on lock-down have re-opened and allowed students to leave.

However the US Senate has been shut down as a precaution while the situation is ongoing.

Earlier, President Obama paid tribute to the military staff who were killed or injured in the attack - describing them as "patriots".
