161 killed & 3,000 arrested after Turkey coup

The Turkish Prime Minister says 161 people died during last night's attempted coup.

Almost 3,000 troops have been detained in the wake of the uprising.

The coup failed after citizens stood up to troops on the streets of Istanbul and the capital Ankara.

Greek Police say a Turkish military helicopter has landed in Greece, and 8 people have sought asylum.

Turkey's President Erdogan says he remains in control.

Andrew Finkel is a journalist based in Istanbul he says people were surprised by how the President reacted to the situation:

There's been international condemnation of last night's attempted coup in Turkey.

The new British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is calling for calm:

The Department of Foreign Affairs is advising Irish citizens to "exercise a high degree of caution" in Turkey.

However, the Irish Travel Agents Association says tourist resorts in Turkey have remained calm despite the coup.

ITAA CEO Pat Dawson:

Central Istanbul was calm this morning, with little sign in Taksim Square of the previous nights unrest.
