Gardai have detected 191 people speeding today, on National Slow Down Day.

Over 85-thousand vehicles have been checked since 7 this morning as part of the initiative, which lasts until 7am tomorrow.

Among those speeding was a vehicle doing 139 kmph in a 100 kmph zone on the N5 in Mayo, a vehicle travelling at 89 kmph in a 60 kmph zone on a local road in Piercetown in Wexford and another doing 108 kmph in an 80 kmph zone in Newmarket on Fergus in Clare.

The Gardai have thanked everyone that was driving within the speed limit and are encouraging people to respect the limits and drive safely.
